Matt Thurber, editor-in-chief at AIN Media Group, has been flying since 1975 and writing about aviation since 1978 and now has the best job in the world, running editorial operations for Aviation International News, Business Jet Traveler, and FutureFlight.aero. In addition to working as an A&amp;P mechanic on everything from Piper Cubs to turboprops, Matt taught flying at his father’s flight school in Plymouth, Mass., in the early 1980s, flew for an aircraft owner/pilot, and for two summer seasons hunted swordfish near the George’s Banks off the East Coast from a Piper Super Cub. An ATP certificated fixed-wing pilot and CFII and commercial helicopter pilot, Matt is type-rated in the Citation 500 and Gulfstream V/550. On July 30, GE Aviation and China Aviation Industry General Aviation (Caiga) signed an agreement at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh for the first network of service centers for the H80 turboprop series in China. The agreement covers the H75, H80 and H85 engines and components. Signing the agreement were Yang Zhong, general manager for Caiga’s sales, marketing and customer service department, and Jim Stoker, president and managing executive for GE Aviation Czech, which manufactures the company’s H80 family.


According to Zhong, “Caiga is creating an expert team for this cooperative program.” The company will provide line maintenance and inspections and engine and component removal and inspections throughout China. Zhong will oversee Caiga’s service center program.


The H80 engine powers the Thrush 510G agricultural airplane, and three 510Gs have already been delivered to Beidahuang, China, as part of a 20-airplane order. Three additional 510Gs are in shipping containers and on their way to China now. Caiga chose the 850-shp H85 for a five-seat single-engine pressurized, composite turboprop that it is developing. The H85 received EASA certification last year and is expected to receive FAA certification next year.


“For the Chinese market,” Zhong said, “we think there is big demand for general aviation aircraft and GE engines. The GE engine is the best in the world, and this is of great importance for Caiga. As the industry [grows], we can do more cooperation with GE.”


H80-series engines are also being shipped to Beidahuang to begin training Caiga technicians.
