At the Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) convention in Phoenix yesterday, Garmin introduced a remote-mount carbon monoxide (CO) detector and an integrated audio panel for the GTR 205 radio series.

The CGO 14 CO detector works with Garmin’s GTN Xi navcoms, GI 275 flight instruments, and TXi flight displays. CO levels are shown on a dedicated page or in user data fields and as visual alerts flashing on the display and aural alerts. Pilots can select limits for activating custom advisories, in addition to the preset alert thresholds. 

Available in the second quarter, the GCO 14 retails for $549 and includes the wiring harness. Sensor lifetime is 10 years. 

“The risk of carbon monoxide continues to pose a real threat to a wide range of aircraft,” said Jim Alpiser, director of aviation aftermarket sales. “Today we are pleased to unveil a new fully integrated carbon monoxide monitoring and alerting solution to help address these hidden dangers.”

Both the GTR 205 for certified aircraft and the GTR 205x for experimental aircraft can be selected with an optional integrated audio panel, expanding the existing two-place intercom to four-place and adding dual com switching and com playback features.

The GTR 205s include individual pilot and copilot volume controls and a combined setting for passengers. Dedicated mic-in for auto-squelch automatically senses cockpit noise levels and adjusts intercom mic squelch. A pilot-isolate feature allows the pilot to listen to the com radio while the copilot and passengers can listen to music.

Other new features for the GTR 205 series include optional dual-com switching for managing an additional com radio, which doesn’t need to be a Garmin radio; a backup mode that automatically connects the pilot’s headset to com 2 in case the primary radio loses power; and com playback, which records up to 150 seconds of radio transmissions.

Owners of new and existing GTR 205 and 205x radios without the optional features can add them via an enablement that can be purchased from Garmin or authorized dealers. The new radios and features will be available in the second quarter.

At the AEA show, Alpiser also announced that Garmin will offer a retrofit GFC 600H autopilot for the Airbus Helicopters H130, which will be available in the second quarter.
