NASA has awarded a $1.2 million contract to Honeywell and Gulfstream for an 11-month test program of synthetic- and enhanced-vision systems (ESVS) technologies in business jet cockpits. The program’s overall research goal is to use SVS and EVS views for “equivalent visual operations,” a key initiative in the FAA’s plan for NextGen. The Honeywell and Gulfstream flight trials will investigate using SVS on approach to as low as 100 feet above the runway threshold and transitioning to the EVS view for landing. Gulfstream’s EVS uses an infrared sensor capable of seeing at night and in low-visibility conditions to project an image on the head-up display that is conformal to the outside world. Separately, Honeywell has been testing a technology that combines the views from its SmartView computer-generated SVS with infrared EVS and portrays the blended image on the primary flight displays.
