Rockwell Collins’s Venue cabin management system is only just finding its way into production business aircraft, but the 3-D moving-map display is already undergoing a major software upgrade. The Version 2 enhancement is “dramatic,” director of cabin systems product marketing Andrew Mohr told AIN. Entirely new mapping includes some two hundred 3-D enhancements and makes use of satellite source data from NASA. To ensure a more realistic viewer experience, Rockwell Collins brought in video gaming programmers who incorporated the latest visual imagery, including reflections, lighting, shadows and sun reflecting on the aircraft skin. A variety of angles allows the user to “watch” an accurate image of the aircraft, complete with a zoom feature and a “window” view. The user can also access cockpit imagery that includes flight instruments and the pilot head-up display. The enhancement is purely a software upgrade, said Mohr, and is the new baseline for future deliveries, starting early next year. The software will also be available as an upgrade to existing hardware, with a price yet to be determined. Venue Version 2 was on display at the Aircraft Interiors Expo last week in Hamburg, Germany, and will be demonstrated at EBACE next month.
