The FAA’s new online aviation maintenance technician (AMT) awards program should be available shortly on the FAA Safety Team Web site. The revised program makes it much easier for technicians to participate in the program, which mirrors many of the processes used for the FAA’s Wings safety program for pilots. Training courses that meet the AMT awards program requirements will be available online, and technicians will no longer have to visit an FAA FSDO or mail proof of training to receive AMT awards. The awards system will also keep track of all training, including employer-provided training, which becomes part of the technician’s permanent training record. Employees can e-mail these records to any interested party, such as a prospective employer, insurance company or school for education credits. Employers can also use the system to keep track of employee training that counts toward employer AMT awards. Industry participants have been beta testing the new AMT awards program system, and the FAA expects to launch the program formally by the end of the first quarter.
