Lufthansa Technik’s restoration of a Lockheed L-1649A Super Star (Super Constellation Starliner) took a major step forward when the airplane was moved on November 20 into a new hangar at Auburn-Lewiston Airport in Maine. Some preliminary work was done on the airplane while it was parked outside, but now the 12 technicians working on the rare airplane can begin an extensive D-check on the airframe, inspecting it for corrosion and fatigue damage. All systems will be overhauled, according to Lufthansa Technik, and wiring, control cables and leads will be renewed. Components removed for renovation include the radome, flaps, rudders, fairings and Curtiss-Wright engines. The entire tail assembly has also been removed and shipped to Lufthansa Technik subsidiary BizJet in Tulsa, Okla. Plans are to restore the cockpit and bring it to the latest technological standard but retain its historical appearance. The cabin will be historically accurate as well. Only four of the 44 L-1649As built are preserved, and this will be the sole airworthy example when it flies in 2011.
