Gulfstream Aerospace last week marked the service entry of the 500th Gulfstream outfitted with the manufacturer’s enhanced vision system (EVS). This milestone was reached eight years after the Savannah, Ga.-based company began offering the flight-deck safety technology to large-cabin Gulfstream operators. The original Gulfstream EVS and now the second-generation EVS II use a nose-mounted forward-looking infrared camera from Elbit Systems subsidiary Kollsman to generate real-time images of the aircraft’s surroundings. According to Gulfstream, the system increases situational awareness at night and during low-visibility daylight conditions by allowing pilots to see terrain, runways, taxiways and approaches that would otherwise be undetectable. To date, EVS I is flying aboard 464 Gulfstreams, while EVS II is installed on 36. Meanwhile, Gulfstream is continuing research and development work in vision-enhancing products at its designated “center of excellence for advanced vision systems” in Savannah
