Sun ’n‘ Fun has always been known for its active, vibrant gyroplane community. You might call 2018 the year the Europeans came to Sun ’n‘ Fun with two manufacturers bringing at least six different models of gyroplanes to display at the show.
AutoGyro (LP-025) develops, produces and sells several models of gyroplanes for the international market from its base in Hildesheim, Germany. The company maintains flight schools, sales, and service partners in more than 40 countries around the globe. This year AutoGyro USA has arrived at Sun ’n‘ Fun 2018 with big news: its tandem seating open cockpit MTOsport model received the top distinction in the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” competition. In 2018, designers and manufacturers from 59 countries submitted more than 6,300 objects to the competition. Autogyro USA is also exhibiting its Primary Category type-certified Calidus enclosed cockpit, side-by-side-seating gyroplane.
Spain-based ELA Aviaçion, (MD-16B, LP-050) is displaying its latest model 10-Eclipse tandem, closed-cockpit (or alternatively open-cockpit) gyroplane, powered by either the Rotax 912 ULS or 914 UL turbocharged engine on the main show flight line as well as in Paradise City. The roomy machine’s monocoque fuselage is made of AISI 4130 chromoly steel with carbon fiber tail and fairings, as well as a carbon fiber pusher propeller. The -10 is one of five gyroplane models ELA produces.
Both companies provide their machines as kits (builder-assist facilities exist in the U.S.) or completed aircraft, and have pricing in euros and dollars, which means that U.S. buyers find that pricing fluctuates with exchange rates, but most of the machines on display at Sun ’n‘ Fun this week feature “show special” pricing in dollars.
