Garmin is unveiling a new line of portable receivers, including its first all-in-one ADS-B and SiriusXM Aviation unit. The new GDL 52/51 line is designed to work with the Garmin Pilot iOS and Android apps and certain Garmin avionics and portable displays. It receives ADS-B IN traffic and weather on both the 978 and 1090 MHz ADS-B frequencies.

The GDL 52 combines dual-band ADS-B IN and SiriusXM weather and audio functions in a single device, while the GDL 51 provides SiriusXM weather and audio entertainment. Both receive GPS position data and provide back-up attitude information to compatible avionics and devices.

With an expected price of $1,149, the GDL 52 supplies ADS-B IN traffic, a range of Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather products and Sirius weather and audio to compatible avionics and portable devices as well as Garmin Connext products through Bluetooth wireless technology or hardwired connections. The ADS-B traffic is overlaid on a dedicated traffic page and enhanced through Garmin’s TargetTrend and TerminalTraffic features.

The GDL 51, with its weather and GPS position and attitude capabilities, will be priced at $649.

With a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the GDL 52 has a five-hour single-charge capability, while the 51 can receive SiriusXM data for up to seven hours.

Both units can operate either wirelessly or hardwired, and are compatible with Garmin's G3X Touch cockpit avionics, the aera 660 and aera 795/796 aviation portables, as well as the Garmin Pilot app on Apple and Android mobile devices.

The GDL 52 is anticipated to be available in the fourth quarter, while the remote-mounted version, the 52R, as well as the GDL 51 and 51R, will be available next week at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh show.
