The University of North Dakota (UND) Flying Team won the 2010 Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) national collegiate aviation competition, which was held at Indiana State University-Terre Haute from May 17 to 22. The win marked UND’s 16th SAFECON championship in the 25 years that the university has participated in this competition.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s two student flight teams placed second and third at SAFECON. The university’s Daytona Beach, Fla. team, the Eagles, held second place in the nation for the second year in a row. The team won the national championship in 1992.
ERAU’s Prescott, Ariz. team, the Golden Eagles, took third place, up from its fourth-place ranking last year. The team won national championships in 1993, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2008.
Southern Illinois University was fourth and the U.S. Air Force Academy placed fifth. This year’s competition involved 330 pilots from 29 U.S. collegiate aviation programs.
