TrueNorth Enhances In-flight Connectivity
New service will be a “hybrid cloud solution” designed to amplify bandwidth and enhance the in-flight connectivity experience.

TrueNorth Avionics announced a new airborne connectivity service today at the Global Connected Aircraft Summit. Dubbed connected.aero, the new service will be a “hybrid cloud solution” designed to amplify bandwidth and enhance the in-flight connectivity experience to be more like that experienced on the ground.

“Inflight connectivity performance has improved over the last 10 years, but the passenger experience is often less than ideal,” said TrueNorth CEO Mark van Berkel. “Included with our Optelity Pro Cabin Gateway product, connected.aero is designed to take advantage of the bandwidth that’s available while creating a secure, more efficient connection between the aircraft and the service provider.”

With characteristically lower bandwidth, in-flight Internet has “challenges,” said TrueNorth. For example, “interruptive content” might load before desired content, eating in-flight bandwidth and curtailing speed. Dropped connections as an aircraft flies through different satellite coverage areas can also negatively affect bandwidth and speed.

Thus connected.aero “brings together a cohesive suite of applications to manage the available bandwidth, add efficiencies and prevent dropped connections.” Since it uses a hybrid cloud model for delivery, connected.aero is service provider independent and designed specifically for use with Optelity Pro.
