The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is expected to release its opinion next month on a rulemaking permitting commercial single-engine turbine operations in instrument meteorological conditions (SET-IMC). The forthcoming opinion follows a briefing with European Union member states in June on the rulemaking.
While no fundamental changes are expected as a result of that consultation, certain areas may be āstrengthened,ā said Jens Hennig, vice president of operations for the General Aviation Manufacturers Association and a participant at the EASA's commercial SET-IMC rulemaking committee. One such area is single-pilot operation, with some member state officials expressing concern that it be permitted at all. In response, the EASA indicated it would review the path to single-pilot qualification, he said.
Release of the opinion, anticipated by the end of September, would keep the rulemaking on pace for completion next year. Once the EASA releases the opinion, it would then move to the European Commission for final consideration.
