Mark Huber is an aviation industry veteran who has worked in the flight training, aircraft sales, aircraft component, and airport development businesses. He has flight time in more than 50 different and diverse aircraft, including helicopters, aerobatic aircraft, vintage warbirds, jet fighters, business jets and turboprops, and transport-category aircraft. He has jumped out of several of these—on purpose—with a parachute. His defense and aviation journalism has been published in a variety of national and international periodicals.

U.S. delegate Eleanor Norton (D-D.C.) has proposed an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2014 transportation appropriations bill that would overturn the FAA ban on most civil helicopter operations within the District of Columbia. Norton’s amendment would pave the way for the re-opening of the South Capitol Street Heliport (09W, SCSH), which has been closed to most public traffic since 2005 to accommodate security concerns. The heliport was opened in 1998 and hosted 41 corporate operators. Public access was limited after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and shut down to all civil operators save medevac after 2005. Norton said the action “amounts to a government takeover of a private facility without compensation, and it should be unthinkable for our government to adopt practices characteristic of authoritarian governments.”
