Construction has begun on the new Maverick Air Center, which is expected to open on the west side of Joe Foss Field/Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD) by the end of the summer. Last October, the airport authority approved $1.6 million to build 12,000 sq ft of hangar space, 5,000 sq ft of office space and parking for the new facility. A fuel farm with capacity for 40,000 gallons of jet-A and 12,000 gallons 100LL avgas is also planned. The facility will offer passenger and pilot lounges, a conference room and flight-planning room. Maverick president Brian Tordsen told AIN the FBO will focus initially on fuel sales before considering additional services such as maintenance and ground handling. The new facility will provide competition for Landmark Aviation, which has been the sole aviation services provider at the airport since the early 1990s.
