The European Helicopter Safety Implementation Team (EHSIT) has released a 22-page “training leaflet” aimed at making helicopter pilots more aware of ­hazards ­identified as major causes of accidents in Europe. Targeted are four topics–degraded visual environment, vortex ring state, loss of tail-rotor effectiveness and static and dynamic rollover. In a degraded visual environment, the safety experts endeavor to have crews conduct a quick but thorough risk analysis. For each of the other three topics, provided are a brief description of the phenomenon, avoidance advice and recovery techniques–sometimes illustrated. Also in the leaflet is a two-page ­preflight planning checklist. All these should help pilots make “better, more informed decisions.” The document is the first outcome of extensive analysis conducted by the European Helicopter Safety Team covering 2000-2005 ­accidents.
