Garmin has rolled out a sub-$16,000 avionics system that’s certified for installation in nearly 600 Class I and II Part 23 airplanes (defined as singles and twins weighing less than 6,000 pounds). The Garmin G500 avionics system, introduced at last month’s EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., includes primary and multifunction displays mounted in a single bezel that can slide into the opening previously occupied by an instrument six-pack. The system, positioned as a competitor to glass display offerings from startup firm Aspen Avionics, includes a solid-state attitude and heading reference system and can interface with any of Garmin’s Waas GPS receivers. A scaled-down version of Garmin’s synthetic-vision technology and GAD 43 autopilot interface are offered as options for the G500 suite for $4,995 and $2,995, respectively. The system can also interface with XM weather and TIS traffic receivers.
