Matt Thurber, editor-in-chief at AIN Media Group, has been flying since 1975 and writing about aviation since 1978 and now has the best job in the world, running editorial operations for Aviation International News, Business Jet Traveler, and FutureFlight.aero. In addition to working as an A&amp;P mechanic on everything from Piper Cubs to turboprops, Matt taught flying at his father’s flight school in Plymouth, Mass., in the early 1980s, flew for an aircraft owner/pilot, and for two summer seasons hunted swordfish near the George’s Banks off the East Coast from a Piper Super Cub. An ATP certificated fixed-wing pilot and CFII and commercial helicopter pilot, Matt is type-rated in the Citation 500 and Gulfstream V/550. Los Angeles Worlds Airports (LAWA) first proposed phasing out jets that meet Stage 2 noise restrictions at Van Nuys Airport in 1990. According to NBAA, new efforts by LAWA to implement that phase-out must be subject to FAA review or approval because too much time has passed since the proposal was originally floated in 1990. While LAWA believes that the Airport Noise and Capacity Act of 1990 allows it to move forward with the phase-out, “LAWA’s factual justifications for the proposal are flawed,” said NBAA, adding, “The phase-out would eliminate an average of only five operations per day, and the evicted aircraft would relocate to other airports in the Los Angeles area, resulting in an overall increase in noise and emissions for the region.” More information is available at: <a href="http://www.nbaa.org/airports/vny blank" target="_blank">www.nbaa.org/airports/vny.</a>
