The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says its new revised NFPA 409 standard does not require Group II hangars to be fitted with foam fire-suppression systems, as was previously thought by NATA and NBAA and reported in last week’s issue of AINmxReports. In an e-mail sent to NBAA, NFPA staffer Tim Hawthorne wrote, “There appears to be some confusion relating to proposed changes to the fire-suppression requirements for the various hangar groups as defined by NFPA 409... There are no proposed changes to the fire-suppression system requirements for Group II hangars. These requirements have been in place since the 1975 edition of NFPA 409. However, proposal CP9 (pages 409 to 411) does include new proposed automatic sprinkler system requirements for Group III hangars.” The comment deadline is March 6, 2009.
