The 11th annual Safety Standdown–sponsored by Bombardier Aerospace, NBAA, the FAA and the NTSB–concludes today in Wichita. This year’s “War on Error” was expanded to a three-day general session, preceded by optional one-day workshops on Monday. The annual event, which is free to attendees, is intended to improve aviation safety by “combining skill-based training with knowledge-based training…[and] initiate and sustain positive changes in behavior and cultural norms.” This year marked the first time the Safety Board cosponsored the seminar. “It’s not often that the NTSB takes a significant role in these external activities,” noted NTSB chairman Mark Rosenker. “But this seminar has caught our attention over the past few years, and I wanted our agency to be a part of it.” He praised the fact that “corporate jets flown by professional crews under Part 91 have accident rates that are comparable to scheduled air carriers,” but added, “There is always room for improvement.” Like this year, two Safety Standdowns will be conducted next year–one in Europe and the other in Wichita.
