It was a close race, but in the end Brazilian airplane builder Embraer chose the Garmin G1000 avionics system for the company’s in-development very light jet and light jet, now known officially as the Phenom 100 and 300.

As part of an announcement made at last month’s NBAA Convention, Embraer said the cockpits for the Phenoms will be named the Prodigy Flight Deck. The integrated systems will include three interchangeable 12-inch displays (two primary flight displays flanking a center-mounted multifunction display) and will incorporate a variety of flight information, including moving maps, terrain, traffic, weather, engine instrumentation and crew-alerting system data.

A senior Embraer official told AIN that the SmartDeck avionics system from L-3 Avionics Systems had been on the shortlist to win the contract, but that Garmin edged out the competing offering primarily based on the high level of brand recognition of Garmin products among potential buyers of the airplanes. Cessna has also selected the G1000 system for its Citation Mustang VLJ.
