The Million Air FBO at Lakefront Airport in New Orleans reopened the historic 1930s-era art deco Moffett hangar, following repairs of damage sustained during Hurricane Katrina. Compared with the rest of the airport, the hangar suffered little damage due to its unusual design. The hangar roof is made of concrete panels, a few of which fell in during the storm and had to be replicated. Large windows in the side walls blew out during the storm, which relieved pressure loads on the building and prevented further damage. The Lakefront terminal building, built at the same time as the Moffett hangar, was seriously damaged during the storm but might be restored in its original style, thanks to a proposal in the works by FEMA’s Historical Preservation Division. The restoration would restore all of the terminal’s original 1930s art deco style and include removal of a façade that was added in 1964.
