Hong Kong Airlines finalized a firm order with Airbus for six A330-200s, the European manufacturer confirmed today. The contract, which closes on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) announced during the Singapore Airshow earlier this year, calls for Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines to power the new aircraft.

The Asian airline now has placed firm orders for a total of 23 A330s, the first of which are scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong before the end of June. The airline plans to use the first airplanes on existing routes and later to launch its first services to Europe.

“Low operating costs and high levels of cabin comfort make the A330-200 the perfect choice to expand into the long haul market,” said Yang Jian Hong, president of Hong Kong Airlines.

Established in 2006, Hong Kong Airlines and sister carrier Hong Kong Express operate a network that links Hong Kong with destinations in mainland China and the Asian region with 13 Boeing 737-800s. The company also holds firm orders for 30 Airbus A320s.
