Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

US Airways plans to start taking deliveries of Embraer jets again this November under a new agreement to convert its remaining positions on 57 Embraer 170s to 99-seat Embraer 190s, 23 of which remain subject to reconfirmation by the airline. Still subject to bankruptcy court approval, the deal includes options on another 50 airplanes from the Embraer 170/190 line. Under the terms of the transition agreement signed by US Airways and America West pilots soon after the airlines’ merger last year, US Airways pilots will fly the airplanes at newly negotiated mainline rates.
The original contract, signed in 2003, involved a firm order for 85 Embraer 170s, 28 of which Embraer had delivered to US Airways before the bankrupt airline ran out of financing options. As part of a $100 million bail-out deal reached last summer, Republic Airways assumed the leases on 18 and bought the remaining 10 Embraer 170s originally delivered to US Airways and assigned to its now defunct wholly owned MidAtlantic unit.
