Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

Last month’s Regco order for 10 Q400s accompanied a flurry of minor transactions for Bombardier since AIN’s February issue went to press, starting with a contract for a pair of 74-seat Q400s from South African Airways. Expected to enter service with the flag carrier’s South African Express operation in Johannesburg, the airplanes will become the first Q400s ever to operate in Africa and join a fleet of seven de Havilland Dash 8-300s and six Bombardier CRJ200 regional jets. 
The recent brisk sales activity has also helped Bombardier gain a still stronger foothold in the Far East, where it recently landed firm orders from three Japanese airlines. On behalf of its Nagoya-based J-Air subsidiary, Japan Airlines agreed to take delivery of a single 50-seat CRJ200; Kagoshima’s Japan Air Commuter converted an option on a 70-seat Q400; and Ryukyu Air Commuter of Okinawa converted an option it held since 1996 on a Dash 8-100 to a firm order for a 50-seat Q300.
