The FAA last week released a report into the September 26 fire at Chicago Center and the two-week ATC service disruption that followed. The agency said some of the service disruption might have been avoided had the more modern technology of the NextGen system been in place at the time of the incident. The agency said an improved voice switching system, capable of allowing ATC frequencies and landlines to be easily accessed from remote locations, is a part of the NextGen architecture.
