Lufthansa’s supervisory board has approved the purchase of two more Airbus A380s, four A320s and one A330-300, the manufacturer announced today. Already the biggest Airbus operator in the world, Lufthansa carries an order backlog that now includes 85 A320-family jets, nine A330s and nine A380s. Its order book also includes 20 Boeing 747-8s Intercontinentals, first delivery of which it expects early next year. Its current fleet of 368 Airbus aircraft encompasses 258 A320s, 37 A330s, 65 A340s and eight A380s. It also operates 30 Boeing 747-400s and 60 Boeing 737s.  

“I am delighted that this additional order will enable us to secure the development of our short-, medium- and long-haul fleets,” said Nico Buchholz, executive vice president of fleet management for Lufthansa Group. “It is the next logical step in our strategy of ongoing fleet modernisation with regard to fuel efficiency, operating costs, noise and emissions.”
