President Obama has nominated NTSB vice-chairman Christopher Hart to become chairman of the Board. The position was vacated when former chair Deborah Hersman left the NTSB on April 25, at which time Hart became acting chairman.

A commercial, multiengine pilot with instrument rating, Hart also holds a law degree from Harvard University and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering from Princeton University. Hart was a member of the NTSB in a previous stint from 1990 to 1993 and also served at the FAA as assistant administrator for system safety and then deputy director for air traffic safety oversight.

“NBAA commends the President for nominating Chris Hart as NTSB chair,” said NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen. “He has held several government positions focused on transportation, and we know from our work with him that he understands the importance of general aviation to America’s transportation system and its economy. He is also someone who views regulatory proposals with a solid understanding of the unique operating characteristics for business aviation. He is willing to listen to all aviation stakeholders and consider innovative approaches to enhancing safety.”
