Aviation insurance provider Starr Aviation promoted its partnership with the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) and Redbird Flight Simulations at EAA AirVenture 2013, by offering pilots the opportunity to avoid accident-related insurance premium increases through participation in the pilot proficiency project.

AirVenture attendees can sign up at the SAFE tent (Educational Interactive Zone, Booth 35) throughout the show for the chance to fly one of 11 scenarios in Redbird’s FMX full-motion simulator. Qualified Starr policyholders can earn credit towards an accident forgiveness endorsement upon successful completion of the simulated flight.

The scenarios highlight a key aspect of the pilot proficiency project–use of simulator-based training to address common causes of general aviation accidents. “One of our key concerns is that flying is so expensive that many pilots can't afford to stay proficient,” SAFE president Doug Stewart told AIN, adding that simulators are an effective method for pilots to maintain currency at less expense.

Program participants can also attend a series of FAA WINGS-approved seminars. Receipt of the accident forgiveness endorsement could waive an insurance premium increase due to an accident occurring after the certification, barring certain overriding factors.
