As Reliable Robotics achieves another milestone in its plan to equip aircraft with the advanced navigation and autoflight system, the company is closer to achieving its goal of nearly autonomous flight capability. The anticipated FAA approval will, however, require that a pilot be onboard to handle contingencies, but in all other respects, the aircraft will be flown by the advanced autopilot, supplemented by an operator on the ground.

ASTM International Publishes First Standards for Vertiport Design

ASTM International has published what appears to be the first specific standards for the design of civil vertiports and vertistops. The new F3423 standard is based on five years of work by the U.S.-based group’s F38 unmanned aircraft systems committee, but it is intended to provide guidance for ground infrastructure to be used with regard to either crewed or uncrewed vehicles, including new eVTOL models.

In August 2022, Destinus, a Switzerland-based developer of hypersonic autonomous cargo aircraft, appointed former astronaut Pedro Duque to its board of directors. He had a 30-year career with the European Space Agency and is the former science minister in the Spanish government. Duque, who earned a degree in aeronautical and aerospace engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, is the former president of Deimos Imaging and currently advises space-focused venture capital group Herius Capital.
